Oppo 4K Blu-ray Players To Get Surprise New FeatureForbes #4K_BluDecember 7, 2018
Oppo is on the verge of rolling out a key new update to its highly acclaimed UDP-203 and UDP-205 4K Blu-ray players that will enable them to play a new type of 4K Blu-ray picture format.
Either by the end of December, or the early part of January.
It is seen as an open-platform, royalty-free rival for the long-available Dolby Vision dynamic metadata HDR system.
Until recently, however, HDR10+ has not really been an issue for 4K Blu-ray players because a) it was only formally ratified as a format last year, and b) so far no 4K Blu-ray discs have been released that carry it.
That’s about to change, though.
It’s now confirmed that the upcoming IMAX Original 4K Blu-rays of Journey To The South Pacific and A Beautiful Planet will carry HDR10+ masters, and there’s a rumor, too, that Bad Times At The El Royale 4K Blu-ray is going to become the first big movie release to be mastered in the format.
Certainly 20th Century Fox, the studio behind El Royale , has previously stated that it intended to launch HDR10+ 4K Blu-rays when the technology was ready.

It’s great news, then, to learn that the Oppo 203 and 205 will soon be able to handle this latest HDR format.
As soon as Oppo provides formal confirmation that the update is coming – ideally with a specific date – I will update this article accordingly.
If you have an advanced connected-home system (or you’re a custom installer), you’ll appreciate the presence of an RS232C serial port and 12V trigger input and output for tying similarly equipped high-end gear together. There’s an infrared sensor back there, too, to eliminate having an IR blaster spoiling the view from the front.
