He hit .276 last year with 15 homers and 62 RBIs, and he won his second straight Gold Glove and third overall.
The 40-year-old Gase was 23-26 in three seasons and one playoff game with Miami before being fired last week.
He replaces Todd Bowles, who was let go following a 4-12 season.
The 27-year-old DeSmith is 12-7-4 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage this season.
