A Twitch stream raising money for UK-based Transgender support charity Mermaids has already raised nearly $350,000 streaming Donkey Kong 64 , and that number just keeps getting higher.
The stream has attracted a wealth of high profile appearances so far, from Chelsea Manning to Jim Sterling, Doom co-creator John Romero and, most surprisingly, freshman congresswoman and rapidly-rising star of the Democratic Party Alexandria Ocasio-Ortez.
“It’s important that we talk about these issues in an economic frame, but not let go of the fact that discrimination is a core reason for economic hardship,” she said.
It doesn’t feel like a coincidence that Twitch had another major breakthrough moment around this time last year, when Ninja and Drake squadded up for the Fortnite session heard round the world.
The Amazon subsidiary, like most social networks, has plenty of difficulties surrounding toxicity, harassment and illegal behavior on its growing platform, but moments like this remind us that it’s likely to keep growing in both scope and influence in the changing media landscape.
The stream is currently on a hiatus, but it still shows 11 days to go.
