Sporting players after cup final loss En Español William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Bas Dost and Gelson Martins have followed the influence of Rui Patricio and Daniel Podence by rescinding their contract with Sporting CP, as announced by the club in a statement sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission.
Carvalho, Fernandes and Martins are all presently with the Portuguese national team in Russia, along with goalkeeper Patricio, and they have claimed ‘just cause’ in disassociating themselves from the Lisbon club.
Like Patricio, Carvalho was one of the captains of the squad and has been a pivotal player for Sporting in the past five seasons, where he has played 192 games and has attracted plenty of interest from abroad.
Bruno Fernandes leaves the team after just one year in Lisbon, but it was a season in which he established himself as one of the best No.
10s in the country.
Towards the end of the season, there was talk in the Portuguese press that Fernandes was being tracked by the likes of Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Gelson Martins joined Sporting as a 15-year-old and now, at 23, he has become a vital player for the first team as he played 138 games and scored 27 goals.
The striker was one of the players who was most affected by the conflict by the ultras as he suffered wounds to his head.
The deadline for using this contract termination clause ends next Thursday, when it will be 30 days after the incident in which around 50 radical fans invaded the training complex and attacked several players.
By losing these six players, Sporting have been plunged further into crisis and this follows an internal crisis at the end of the season , led by the president Bruno de Carvalho, which led to the exit of head coach Jorge Jesus, who has joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Eligible for both Portugal and Angola, Carvalho chose to represent the former. When he was still part of the Portugal under-20s the Angolan Football Federation tried to call him up, but were rejected.[3]
